Gmail Chat Disabled

Gmail Chat disabled on the Network The fact that it happened does not surprise me but that it took so long for our network administrators to figure it out does.

And if you are wondering how do you disable Gmail's chat features on your network, you only need locking DNS lookups to chatenabled.mail.google.com, by returning 127.0.0.1.

it was disabled did not surprise me much but the fact that it has been enabled again surprises me more.

I don't think it was disabled. I got the same message on the same day, and I *AM* my system administrator. Unless I have a split personality and disabled it behind my own back, the message was a bug.

What I find interesting is hte method for disabling chat you mention. If this is indeed true, then all a savvy user should need to do to re-enable chat would be to find an IP for chatenabled.mail.google.com and stick it in their hosts.txt file... right?

Matt, I talked to our campus's Network Administrator today and he said he hadn't done anything to "block" chat in Gmail. So it could've only been due to a bug.

And yes, I think the hosts file should do the trick as long as the IP isn't blocked too.

Can you guys be more specific in how to counteract this method of disabling Gmail chat. Like a step by step on how to "find an IP for chatenabled.mail.google.com and stick it in their host.txt file". I believe my network administrator actually did disable the chat. Would be very much appreciated!

Anon,
If you're behind a proxy, the hosts file won't be of help. So I guess, you can't really counteract this administrators blocking chat in Gmail.

I couldn't find the hosts.txt file you guys were talking about, so I had my suspicions I was still going to be out of luck. Thanks for the crushed hope. :) Although, if you do come across any other fix, please post. Thx.

It works here, Gmail Chat is unblocked

Tx Anonymous 4:20 :D
Well, my identity is the only one blocked on my computer, and then only in Firefox, AND I am an administrator! I got here by googling 'chatenabled.mail.google.com' because I figure I can reverse it IF I can find it, which I can't. This has happened through 2 uninstall/installs of Firefox, too! This is getting old. Any words of advice?

this does work.. i check the ip for the domain you mentioned.. and blocked the domain in the watchguard firewall and it worked. my concern is if google changes the ip for this.. then it will again be accessible.

Regular HTTP uses TCP port 80, but HTTPS uses TCP port 443. I guess some admins forget to block port 443.
Thanks so much for the suggestion!!

The message I got was that I had signed out of GMail chat and needed to sign back in in order to re connect, however that did not make any difference.

Google.com did not work for me either.

I use Firefox, and went into tools, and clicked on clear private date. I cleared both cache and cookies and my problem was solved.

I found the information at :

bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=82446

Hope this helps - it fixed mine-I am elated!!!!

I just found out that if chat is disabled in gmail and if you r unable to enable using the option on the bottom of the home page of gmail then all you have to do is to click the 'Older Version' on the top right of the window! it makes the chat enable without doing anything else!

Check your system time, date and year.If your system time has been set to a future date, this error may come because some certificate may get expired. For me the same issue came and when I changed the system time back to correct time, the issue got solved and chat was enabled.

If your cmos battery is dead, it will start your computer off at the default time, of which mine is January 1, 2000. In firefox, tools, options, advanced, you can add chatenabled.google.com as a security exception. (I don't have the option of replacing a battery on this old hunk of crap)

I don't understand how my Gmail got to be 'chat enabled.' I never set it to be. Problem is someone is using it to obstruct my emails. Everytime I try to attach something to an email it says 'chatenabled.mail.google.com' in the bar on the bottom of the screen. Then I can no longer do anything at all.

Does anybody know what's happening and how I can disable 'chat' (whatever that really means)? I'm not knowledgeable about computers, so I'd need very clear and simple instructions.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

jayant kaushik Thanks a lot.

You saved my job and my life with that information about updating my computer's time. It may be that simple to you but for me I wasted a lot of time trying to make gmail chat work.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Sometimes Gmail chat is not working. Yeah. Maybe you’re right. System date should be check first when encountering that kind of problem.

Community effort to create a single persistence model for the Java community

A community effort led by Sun Microsystems is aiming to create a single 'Plain Old Java Object' persistence model to provide a single object/relational mapping facility for Java app developers in J2SE and J2EE. Paul Krill writes In a letter to the “Java Technology Community” on Friday, specification leads on Java Specification Request (JSR) 220, which is the proposal for Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0, and JSR-243, for Java Data Objects, state that the two technologies feature divergent persistence models. “This divergence has caused confusion and debates among Java developers, and is not in the best of interest of the Java community,” said JSR-220 leader Linda DeMichiel who also is a Sun employee, and Craig Russell, a staff engineer at Sun who leads JSR-243. “In response to these requests [for an end to the unwanted divide], Sun Microsystems is leading a community effort to create a single POJO (Plain Old Java Object) persistence model for the Java community,” the letter said.
